Oliver’s food stop, Wyong

by cafedave on May 28, 2007

Allpress espresso coffee. The internet has spoken, and it has told the truth. This is indeed the better venue for coffee purchase at this roadside destination.

Coffee is ground to order, and, though there’s a huge head of foam at the top of the cup, the coffee itself is worthy of comparison to some of the cafes in sydney that i’ve frequented: far better than anything you might hope to get by the side of the road. I should mention that I had the decaf.

Bella Espresso, Bellevue Hill

by cafedave on April 16, 2007

Allpress espresso. 9 Bellevue Road, Bellevue Hill. Busy and popular, it’s standing room only outside, but there’s still some room indoors where a couple of wooden boxes against a wall have been artfully transformed into comfortable seating by virtue of some plush cushioning.

Ordering is all outside; four staff work busily in a small kitchen space; taking orders, cooking – the scent of grilling bacon drifts across the indoors – and an ipod provides some relaxing music. newspapers are on offer for customers to browse. Some baby chillies sit in water bottles in an installation artwork.

Even the regulars’ dogs are known by name, but if you’re just visiting, you could be in for a wait.

Coffee breaks all reasonable convention in how long it takes to arrive; perhaps have a regular order for you. When it arrives, it’s good; not too strong, not too hot.

Update 20th January 2010: Bella Espresso has closed, and been replaced by a cafe (as yet unreviewed) called BLIP. Due to consistent anonymous comments, I’ve closed comments on this post.

Danks St Depot, Waterloo.

by cafedave on April 16, 2007

Allpress espresso coffee. 2 Danks Street Waterloo. Across the road from a Hillsong centre, this café, despite its humble exterior, has a truly attractive interior – lots of wood, and some bare metal. The café is buzzing with a well-to-do crowd.

Staff are friendly and effervescent: taking orders on little PDAs. The staff wear long, white aprons, adding to the restaurant feel of the venue. The kitchen noises can be heard over the background music, and the conversation of other diners mixes through too.

Coffee takes a while in peak time, but it’s worth waiting for. Smooth, a little thin but easy drinking.

Macro wholefoods café, Concord

by cafedave on March 12, 2007

Allpress organic coffee. Next to the organic food store is a café with the kind of gluten free menu you’d expect. Surprisingly, there are a couple of organic meat options – it’s not all vegetarian and vegan.

The soundscape is mostly the sound of coins hitting the till. The table numbers are attached to cute plastic moneyboxes, with money raised going to their charity of the month.

Coffee is hot, but smooth. At first, it’s pleasant enough, but later it settles a little heavy on the palate.

Update: closed down.

Benny boyd’s, Neutral Bay

by cafedave on January 30, 2007

Allpress coffee. At first glance, this appears to be a sandwich shop with some outdoor seating, but step inside, and you’ll see a fully-fledged café/sandwich bar with a peaceful, well-lit upstairs lounge and dining area.

Staff are friendly and efficient, food choices are healthy, and the place is equally suited to relaxing with friends, or a low-key business meeting.

Coffee takes a little while to arrive, but is pleasant and well made: I haven’t had an Allpress coffee for a while, and it’s good to be reacquainted with it.

Allpress Espresso, Rosebery

by cafedave on August 6, 2006

Allpress coffee. 58 Epsom Rd, Rosebery. In the middle of industrial roseberry is this crowded nook. Seating for about 20, and all but two of the seats are taken on a busy saturday morning.the crowd are fairly well-to-do, and have travelled to the store either for the coffee, or the range of enticing food.

Coffee is good: despite a bit of a wait – a queue of lids were ahead of mine to reach the barista – smooth, strong, very pleasant.

Update: completely refurbished: great interior design, a little more seating capacity. Lots of takeaway customers, and plenty of space for them to stand.
