DVD: Night Watch

DVD: Night Watch
More than just a russian version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is an action movie on the edge of horror that manages to be somewhat character-driven. Not for the squeamish, but an interesting tale of the blur between good and evil.

Video: (4 hour) Hamlet

Video: Hamlet
It’s been almost ten years since I saw this last, and much has changed since then. My ability to understand Shakespeare has improved and worsened. Improved, in that I can better follow what’s being said, and the lessons of life that are presented therein, worsened in that I struggle more to follow the iambic [...]

Serenity

DVD: Serenity
Watched this on DVD, having already seen it at the movies. It stands up well, although on the small screen, it actually feels smaller, and seems to move through faster. Still has a great sense of humour, good character interplay, and is enjoyable to watch.

DVD: Plan 9 from Outer Space

DVD: Plan 9 from Outer Space
Called the worst film ever made, and perhaps this is fair, this is the science fiction tale of a group of aliens and their sinister plot. Watchable mainly for how poorly made it is, it has stood the test of time quite well.

DVD: Walk the Line

DVD: Walk the Line
Tells the story of part of the life of Johnny Cash. Good performances, a good story: especially the insights into family life.

TV: Gosford Park

TV: Gosford Park
A very clever film, telling a story of the aristocracy gathered at a country estate and their servants. Well put together, great storytelling and camera work, and a complex puzzle to keep whodunnit fans guessing.

DVD: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

DVD: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Has some funny moments, but is not without an overabundance of adult materials. If people have recommended it to you, you’ll probably find it entertaining, but it’s far from a clean movie.

DVD: Alexander

DVD: Alexander - Director’s Cut
We had this recommended for New Testament as a way to get an idea of the looks of the different places: it certainly conjured up some extra thoughts about the big differences in culture that were involved in bringing Greek language and culture to the known world, but as a movie, [...]

DVD: Mr. & Mrs. Smith

DVD: Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Brad Pitt still can’t really act, but this role - like the other roles that he excels at - doesn’t require much from him. Entertaining action movie with some amusing lines and a romantic subplot: you find yourself barracking for the couple.

DVD: Yes, Prime Minister

DVD: Yes, Prime Minister (seasons 1 and 2).
Watching Jim, Humphrey, and Bernard again is one of life’s simple pleasures.
Sir Humphrey: “Yes, but even though they probably certainly know that you probably wouldn’t, they don’t certainly know that, although you probably wouldn’t, there is no probability that you certainly would.”

House

House - Season 1

DVD: The Usual Suspects

DVD: The Usual Suspects
An old staple, this kept me company while I ploughed through some housework - I still notice the odd subtlety that I haven’t spotted in previous viewings.

DVD: Ross Noble - Unrealtime

DVD: Ross Noble: Unrealtime
An amazing sequence of improvisational comedy, although quite crass in places. Two shows on two DVD’s, with a few special features showing that perhaps Ross is like this all the time.

DVD: Into the Woods

DVD: Into the Woods
At first, Sondheim’s melodies are off-putting, but it soon settles into the background. One of my favourite musicals; somehow I’d forgotten much of the plot, and so it was like watching it for the first time all over again. "Agony" is still an awesome song, although not everyone watching it appreciated the [...]

DVD: Cellular

DVD: Cellular
Looks like it will be a fairly mindless B-grade action movie, and it is, but it’s still quite watchable, and there’s enough suspense to keep it interesting.

DVD: A Very Long Engagement

DVD: A Very Long Engagement
Amazing visually, great character interplay, a story that draws the viewer in; being a French film, there’s more adult content than some viewers would be comfortable with; shows the great cost of going to war.

DVD: Coach Carter

DVD: Coach CarterA by the numbers high-school drama. Samuel L. Jackson gives a good performance - a more complex character than he usually portrays. Watchable, not much thinking required. A good movie to recover from the flu to.

DVD: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

DVD: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Worth a repeat viewing. There’s a lot of truth about relationships to be gleaned from this film.

DVD: The Princess Bride

DVD: The Princess Bride
What better way to spend an evening than to watch this movie with your wife while cooking dinner for her. Timeless film, but probably could benefit from subtitles so I could follow those few lines I hadn’t already memorised. Rangehoods can be pretty noisy things at times.

DVD: Anger Management

DVD: Anger Management
Another Adam Sandler movie, in the traditional sense. Usual cast, usual type of humour, but it somehow manages to be entertaining in spite of itself. The West Side Story songs seemed to fit particularly well.
