Album: Has Been - William Shatner

After months of thinking about it, I bought the William Shatner / Ben Folds album titled “Has Been” (link to the itunes music store) - I’m enjoying it. One of my favourite songs is That’s Me Trying (link to lyrics); partly because it reminds me of someone I met once.
If you’re a fan of Ben [...]

die hard trilogy

With Die Hard 4.0’s arrival on the big screen, I thought it would be a good idea to review the earlier Die Hard movies.
Die Hard (1988),
Die Harder (1990), and
Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) are available in any number of different DVD editions: how have they stood the test of time?
It’s very odd to see [...]

DVD: Rocky Balboa

DVD: Rocky Balboa
A worthy ending to a series that had a lot of low-points. Probably a better sixth episode than “revenge of the sith”. If you like Rocky movies, this has it all, but with a little more drama. Even has something to appeal to non-fans of the saga.

DVD: Hot Fuzz

DVD: Hot Fuzz
Repays a second viewing. Yarp!

DVD: The Game

DVD: The Game
The Game has aged well: still a great thriller - even when you know the ending. More bad language in it than I remember. Michael Douglas is awesome as the lead.

DVD: Infernal Affairs

DVD: Infernal Affairs
This 2002 Hong Kong movie was the basis for Scorsese’s The Departed. Having watched this film, there’s not much in the latter film that is original - it’s just had the Hollywood treatment, which is to say, an increase in violence, more sex and adult themes, and a slightly more complex plot. The [...]

DVD: Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale

DVD: Footrot Flats: The Dog’s Tale
As much as I enjoyed the comic strip when I was a child, this film - while capturing the slapstick elements of the comic’s world - doesn’t quite rise up to the heights that a more recent kid’s movie would. A few amusing moments, but really, for die-hard fans only.

The Office (US Version, season one)

DVD: The Office (US Version).
More like the traditional US sitcom, this nonetheless has its funny moments. I prefer the original.

DVD: The Office (BBC) Season One

DVD The Office (BBC) Season One
This British television show is filmed documentary-style, and shows the interaction between a number of hard-to-work-with characters in a work environment that’s at times too close to the truth.

DVD: Boston Legal Season One

DVD: Boston Legal Season One
A TV series that tells the story of an aging lawyer, Denny Crane (William Shatner), who was once a great trial attorney, but is now on the decline, his co-workers, and the surreal world they live in. Somehow walks the line of being funny, and engaging in social commentary.

DVD: The Station Agent

DVD: The Station Agent
Slow moving story of three unlikely friends as they eke out a relationship despite their social dysfunction and tough life situations. Enjoyable to watch a story that’s more character driven than anything else, and watch engaging characters as they’re drawn out of their shells.

DVD: Paycheck

DVD: Paycheck
Textbook John Woo action flick; all the trademarks: the dove, the Mexican standoffs. Lots of action, one-dimensional acting: $8 well spent to own the DVD.

DVD: Thumbsucker

DVD: Thumbsucker
Highly unusual rite-of-passage film telling the story of a 17 year old boy’s attempt to give up sucking his thumb. Classic independent film: for fans of Keanu Reeves, this is worth a look, but in general, nothing stand-out here.

DVD: Lord of War

DVD: Lord of War
If you’re a Nicolas Cage fan, or interested in considering some of the issues involved in international arms trafficking, this is worth a look.

DVD: Three Dollars

DVD: Three Dollars
David Wenham gives an above average performance in this story about a man’s quest to keep his integrity. Has an unusual sense of realism to it, while not being too over the top.

DVD: The Interpreter

DVD: The Interpreter
A fairly average thriller, notable as the first movie filmed in the United Nations building. Lots of DVD extras.

DVD: Primer

DVD: Primer. A science geek movie: starts out easily enough, but soon becomes complex due to the nature of the invention the two main characters create.

DVD: Night Watch

DVD: Night Watch
More than just a russian version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is an action movie on the edge of horror that manages to be somewhat character-driven. Not for the squeamish, but an interesting tale of the blur between good and evil.

Video: (4 hour) Hamlet

Video: Hamlet
It’s been almost ten years since I saw this last, and much has changed since then. My ability to understand Shakespeare has improved and worsened. Improved, in that I can better follow what’s being said, and the lessons of life that are presented therein, worsened in that I struggle more to follow the iambic [...]

Serenity

DVD: Serenity
Watched this on DVD, having already seen it at the movies. It stands up well, although on the small screen, it actually feels smaller, and seems to move through faster. Still has a great sense of humour, good character interplay, and is enjoyable to watch.
