College is back on for the year. I’m studying Romans in Greek, and (2nd year) Greek Grammar. So far I’ve read one book (see below), skimmed a couple more, and started wrestling with some translation work - I’ve forgotten quite a bit over the break, but it’s starting to come back to me.

Book: Whose Word is it? The Story Behind Who Changed the New Testament and Why
(US Title: Misquoting Jesus: the story behind who changed the bible and why)
I’ve been meaning to read this for a long while, so I was happy that it appeared in a list of books that I can read for college.
Bart D. [...]

[still life with] Ever wonder how magazine food photography shows off such a broad range of cutlery and crockery? Here’s a tour of Martha Stewart’s prop room.

Giotto art caffe, east sydney
Café de colombia. 78 stanley st, east sydney. Art for sale lines the walls; high-backed couches sit below the picture line, providing a worthy backdrop to the well-dressed eat-in clientele.
The silence is broken only by the sound of orders being placed, and the occasional sound [...]
February 25, 2008 – 9:40 am
Mountain harvest café, katoomba
Nirvana coffee. Katoomba st, katoomba. Wooden floors, dark-painted wooden furniture; a sleepy vibe, friendly service, but not rushed. Paintings for sale line the walls, soft music is playing. High ceilings, with standard-issue office panels and air-conditioning vents, yet there’s a sense of space. The scent of [...]

When I signed up to do Sunday school teaching, I thought that I would simply be able to project my own high school experience on the high schoolers of today.
To some extent, this is true: the experience of going to high school is much the same, even if the class sizes, timetables, and schools are [...]

Stir café, balmain
Allpress espresso coffee. 354 darling st, balmain. A green colourbond fence surrounds a paved courtyard with its funky wooden chairs, and black-painted wooden tables.
Staf are friendly, they even come to the table and pour your water for you, with a slice of lemon in the glass: above [...]

Book: Escape from Reason
I read this book in a single day, which should give you a feel for its length. Nonetheless, Francis Schaeffer covers some significant ground in just a few pages.
If you’ve ever wondered about the evolution of philosophy over the last 8 centuries or so, this seems a tight summary. This isn’t a [...]

Book: The Innocent Man
John Grisham in his first book of non-fiction: the story of a man, wrongly convicted for murder, and the problems in the US justice system. I prefer Grisham when he’s writing fiction - having read the blurb, I knew too much of where the book was going.

Quikfix coffee, sydney domestic terminal 2
Allpress coffee. Fast moving order process here: grind to order, helpful staff. Overlooks the tarmac. Sells food, coffee beans, and snacks.
Coffee is quite good. Hot, but not too hot, just the right texture. A good find as you race to your flight.
February 16, 2008 – 8:53 pm
Diva coffee and tea house, mirage / gold coast
Merlo coffee. Quite a formal looking place inside, with some undercover outdoor seating that’s a bit more relaxed. Freshly made juice here that’s excellent, an amazing range of chocolates, cakes and pastries.
The decaf espresso was a bit of a disaster: flat, [...]
February 16, 2008 – 8:53 pm
Artemis coffee, marina mirage growers’ markets, gold coast
Artemis coffee. Just a stall at the markets, but they’re selling beans that were roasted in brisbane the day before, and they’re serious enough to have a separate grinder for decaf.
Coffee - a decaf latte and a decaf short black - good, [...]

Trio’s harbourside café, kirribilli
Belaroma coffee. Shop 4, 12 fitzroy st, kirribilli. On the east side of the harbour bridge, and indeed with water views from some tables, this indoor : outdoor café is fairly quiet on this friday afternoon. A solid range of menu offerings: breakfast, lunch, even some [...]

There’s now a 16GB iPhone (still not on sale in Australia), and a 32GB iPod touch ($AUD629 vs $AUD399 for the 8GB and $AUD499 for the 16GB).
February 11, 2008 – 6:35 pm
At least the sledging in New Zealand is polite.
February 10, 2008 – 10:17 pm
Movie: 3:10 to Yuma
It’s a western, and it’s a remake of an older film (though I haven’t seen the older film). Christian Bale and Russell Crowe are well matched on screen; a compelling, though violent, story is told: one of redemption and honour. At the end, though, has anyone really learned anything? Is being the [...]

Book: Show Them No Mercy
The Old Testament talks about a lot of killing - and the New Testament talks about a lot of love and forgiveness. How is it possible to reconcile the two views? This book has four different authors - C.S. Cowles, Eugene H. Merrill, Daniel L. Gard, and Tremper Longman III - [...]
