Lobby café, nab plaza sydney
Voodoo espresso coffee. A portable café of sorts: one staff member takes the orders, one does the milk, one the shots. After ordering, there are two sides of the café to stand on: one for smokers, one for non-smokers. A better look around reveals that [...]
The loft café, bondi junction
Caffe musetti coffee. In an enviable location within bondi junction westfield, this is a place to take a break from designer shopping and catch your breath. Order at the counter and take a table number back to your choice of couches, stools or even outdoor [...]
It’s not often I receive an email from a stranger speaking of the virtues of a particular blend of coffee. This is easily the best Italian coffee I’ve ever had: bright start, lots of complexity, and a pleasant finish.

PDF article on coffee freshness, explaining another point of view on the difference between local coffee roasters and imported coffee that has been roasted overseas.
An aromatic blend: I think I prefer their general blend, though.

Bacino espresso bar, mosman
Little italy coffee. Very italian, from the sambucca bottle high up on the shelves, to the choice of biscotti and pastries. Staff are friendly and efficient., and despite its tiny size, there’s a queue for the coffee.
Coffee is a good temperature and texture; some mild acidity; [...]

Four olives deli, manly
Illy coffee. Just down the road from coles. Water is provided in a bottle with a removable cork. The deli here is excellent, the staff helpful and efficient.
Coffee, though, is disappointing. Tastes a bit stale, despite the vaccuum packed metal containers that feed straight into the [...]

The avenue café and espresso bar, mosman
Mokador coffee. Sinatra music is softly piped into this cheery wood-lined space. Dark chocolate colour scheme, friendly staff, locals enjoying breakfast. Not cheap - the big breakfast weighs in at $16.50, but that includes juice and coffee.
Coffee is the right temperature, but the [...]
Missed most of this week’s lecture due to unavoidable commitments. Being so late for a lecture (catching the last 20 minutes out of 180) gives a different spin on things: everyone else is mentally exhausted, you’re alert, but rather lost. Now I have some catching up to do, and some more vocab words to learn.
The [...]

Movie: The Reaping
What starts out as a documentary-style film with the occasional jump moment quickly orphs into a horror movie, all with a religious sub-plot. Special effects are good, but without the plot and characters to hold it together, this is more a cautionary tale of movie-making than anything else.
Editorial: The power of speech can transform: The art of oratory has transmuted into the routine of speechmaking. It is a deafening loss.
Gallery café, annandale
Campos coffee. Tiny street frontage belies a massive space inside; big windows at the back overlook the local houses. A range of paintings adorn the walls, as you’d expect from a “gallery café”; spare walll space is adorned wi h a variety of indoor plants. Locals [...]
Zenith café, annandale
Karmee coffee. Modern interior design: lots of straight lines, dark colours. Concrete floor with lots of wooden furniture, stainless steel kitchen, an old stove and a modern fireplace. More geared toward eat-in than takeaway: it’s not immediately obvious where to order - the cash register is tucked [...]

This week’s ministry formation class was again split in two: in the first part (one hour), we worked through some more of the history of biblical theology. This time, we looked at the three major epochs of the old testament: in this case, defined as Adam to Abraham, Abraham to Solomon, and beyond Solomon.
In the [...]

Movie: Shooter
Mark Wahlberg in a by-the-numbers Hollywood action thriller. If you like movies with explosions, and with plot twists, and you’re prepared to suspend your sense of legal justice, then this is a movie that you’ll like to see. Having decided on the film based on Wahlberg and the explosions, dodge the trailer if you [...]

Book: The God Delusion
Is religion really to blame for the world’s ills? Why is religion afforded special protection from public scrutiny - everything else can be argued about, but if you talk about religion, it’s a private matter, and not to be argued about.
In this book, (famous atheist) Richard Dawkins presents atheism as a worldview. [...]

[kottke] New Yorker article on commuting - …imagine that there is a triangle, its points comprising where you sleep, where you work, and where you shop. In a canonical English village, or in a university town, the sides of that triangle are very short: a five-minute walk from one point to the next. In many [...]
