Book: The ESV bible

Book: The ESV Bible
Thanks to a late catch-up read this afternoon, I managed to finish reading through the bible (including reading the New Testament and the Psalms twice) this afternoon. I would highly recommend the M’Cheyne plan if you’re searching for a new year’s resolution along the lines of "Read my bible more" - it [...]

garden - dec 31st 2006

Now with added cooking herbs! Somehow, I’ve managed to keep most of these plants alive (there have been a few tragic casualties along the way. See you next year!

Don adán coffee too, cremorne

Don adán coffee too, cremorne

Don adán coffee. Nestled in an arcade at the back of the cremorne orpheum is another outpost of this café. This café is proudly south american, and the background noise is a mix of the barista’s conversation and the radio.
Seating is split between indoor and [...]

Well connected, glebe

Well connected, glebe

Campos coffee. Stays true to its heritage as a converted house with a choice of seating: table and chairs or armchairs and couches. From 11am each day, you can sit on the balcony or upstairs, earlier it’s just the ground floor, overlooking glebe point road, the espresso [...]

About thyme, cremorne

About thyme, cremorne

Toby’s estate coffee. This place is a combination of deli and food court style eatery. After ordering at the counter, you’re directed to a bench where there’s self-serve water, cutlery and serviettes.
The conversations of fellow diners is drowned out by the background music: some ambient jazz. There’s [...]

Movie: Babel

Movie: Babel
The Tower of Babel is the bible story where God confuses the language of the people on earth. The uniting element of this film is seeing people from a range of different languages and cultures fail to communicate with each other.
A somewhat depressing, but clever film that interweaves a series of plots and characters [...]

Book: Jesus and the Victory of God

Jesus and the Victory of God - N. T. Wright
I was starting to wonder if I’d ever make it to the end of this book - as was the person who generously loaned me the book these past months.
Wright here spills a lot of ink, and quotes a lot of other scholars. His purpose? [...]

Café niki, surry hills

Café niki, surry hills

A converted house with a lot of fairly confronting artwork on the walls, radio playing in the background. Service was lacking: no-one gave me a menu, even after waiting at a table for a few minutes. Neither did anyone stop me on the way out. Granted, [...]

Bacigalupo, newtown

Bacigalupo, newtown

Caffe di stefano coffee. A quick crossing of king st from the cinema and you’re there. A remarkably high-ceiling-ed building, this place offers a range of cakes, and more substantial meals.
Coffee takes a long while to arrive, but when it does, it’s worth the wait. My offsider [...]

Café azzara, newtown

Café azzara, newtown

Mokambo coffee. Once upon a time, this place (6 king st) was a vegetarian café called the Green Iguana. Now, under new management, it’s an al new café with full kitchen and espresso bar.
It’s hard to tell the flavour of the coffee from the affogato the ice [...]

Cinque, newtown

Cinque, newtown

Primo caffe coffee. Attached to the dendy cinema at newtown (you have to walk past the café to reach the cinema), this place is a regular destination for a pre or post-movie snack.
When they’re busy, they hand out raffle tickets to the queueing diners, not as a contest, [...]

Photorealistic Perspective

Photoshop tutorial: Photorealistic Perspective - I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot of this around soon.

grind (surf rd), cronulla

grind (surf rd), cronulla

Espresso Di Manfredi coffee. How is Cronulla institution (I’d rather be at) "Grind" going with its transition to a larger premises? Everything is coming along nicely, even settling into a routine. Veteran staff, and some additional new faces to help make the transition to seven days [...]

Café parlo, cronulla

Café parlo, cronulla

Belaroma coffee. Bright, well lit seating inside and outside with a well-stocked bar. Staff buzz around, friendly but not outgoing. Water is only brought out on request, ditto the all-day breakfast menu if you arrive at lunchtime.
Coffee takes a while to arrive, and while the glass itself [...]

Sapho books / café, glebe

Sapho books / café, glebe

Toby’s estate (fair-trade) coffee. At the back of a second hand bookshop is a tranquil courtyard with matching espresso bar. Open to suggestions as to how to make coffees, the staff are much more easy going than I probably deserve.
Coffee takes a little while to [...]

Happy Feet

Movie: Happy Feet
A movie that kids who are tolerant to occasional scares will enjoy (there were a few tears in the screening I caught). Environmental message meets big musical and dance numbers, with a few Robin Williams lines thrown in for good measure. Watchable, though probably not my favourite movie this year.

visualising the bible in a year

We’re fast approaching that time of year where new years’ resolutions come to mind. If you’re thinking that you’d like to know more about the Bible, but you’re not sure where to start, the ESV blog has a number of visualisations of its bible reading plans to choose from.

Final Potter title announced - and it’s not Harry Potter and the Revenge of the Death Eaters, in case you were worried.
