The final stretch - psalms on a table

The final stretch - psalms on a table

Finished the last 40 psalms (21-60) in my lunch break. Next time, I think i’ll read more slowly, and look at the detail a little more, but I think having read them will help me understand tonight’s overview lecture.

Anise, king st newtown - revisited.

Anise, king st newtown - revisited.

Danes coffee. Friendly staff greet you on arrival, and water is brought to the table even before you order - always a good start. The courtyard at the back has a choice of outdoor furniture, seating about thirty. It’s a breezy, laid back space.

psalms on a train

It’s the read-slabs-of-the-bible part of semester. This week, just to keep up with what was covered in class, I read Ecclesiastes, Job, and Revelation. Yesterday, I read 30 Psalms over the course of two train trips. This week’s Old Testament lecture is on the Psalms, and so that’s the prescribed reading: all 150 Psalms. I [...]

Rambo returns

Stallone’s IMDB page certainly had it right; not only is there a new Rocky movie (out here January 4th), but in 2008, we’ll see the return of Rambo.

Sheik says sorry

In case you miss it later on Sheik says sorry… (for -based on his comments as reported - comparing women who are not wearing the hijab to uncovered meat, and saying that it’s their own fault if they’re raped)

Book: The New Puritans

Book: The New Puritans: The Rise of Fundamentalism in the Anglican Church
Dr Muriel Porter has written a work that I found hard to read; there are moments where the logic of her argument seems lacking, and it was just a case of putting forth opinions without explaining them.
At other times, there are some historical points [...]

a taste of childhood

As I took my first bite of lunch today, I was suddenly swept back to primary school. Two to three days a week (depending on when Sunday’s lamb roast ran out), I would have a roast-lamb, lettuce and tomato sauce sandwich on brown bread. I’d take the sandwich out of my Decor Duo lunchbox - [...]

cactus

cactus

The key to having a good balcony garden is including a majority of plants that are hard to kill. One of my favourites is this little cactus, although I think I’m enjoying it more as my desktop wallpaper than I do as something I spend time looking at on [...]

sunday afternoon latte

sunday afternoon latte

When leading evening service, there are a few important steps. Some bible reading, some prayer, thinking about what you’re going to say. This week, I’ve added a bowl-latte to those steps.

Next sunday I’m preaching: there will probably be even more coffees in preparation there. I’m glad [...]

Alley break, cronulla

Alley break, cronulla

Piazza d’oro coffee. About as close to the beach as you can get without sweeping sand from under the tables. A little pricey, but not beyond what you’d expect for the location. Seats about 40 people in close-together outdoor tables.
Coffee is pretty slow in arriving. When it’s [...]

Movie: Crank

Movie: Crank
Despite a trailer with the promise of a solid action film - one with a simple, but workable premise - this movie turns out to be far more like a video game poorly brought to the big screen. Plot is lacking, dialogue is overly heavy with the kind of swearing that suggests the writers [...]
