DVD: Thumbsucker
Highly unusual rite-of-passage film telling the story of a 17 year old boy’s attempt to give up sucking his thumb. Classic independent film: for fans of Keanu Reeves, this is worth a look, but in general, nothing stand-out here.

DVD: Lord of War
If you’re a Nicolas Cage fan, or interested in considering some of the issues involved in international arms trafficking, this is worth a look.

DVD: Three Dollars
David Wenham gives an above average performance in this story about a man’s quest to keep his integrity. Has an unusual sense of realism to it, while not being too over the top.

DVD: The Interpreter
A fairly average thriller, notable as the first movie filmed in the United Nations building. Lots of DVD extras.

DVD: Primer. A science geek movie: starts out easily enough, but soon becomes complex due to the nature of the invention the two main characters create.

Book: Letters from the Inside. A book for teenagers, and an easy read, but somewhat dark. Two penpals - teenage girls - correspond over the course of a year.

DVD: Night Watch
More than just a russian version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this is an action movie on the edge of horror that manages to be somewhat character-driven. Not for the squeamish, but an interesting tale of the blur between good and evil.

Bills, surry hills
Vittoria Coffee. Bills by name, bills by nature: perhaps the most expensive breakfast venue you’ll find, even without the weekend surcharge. Still, their corn fritters are the talk of the town: i’ve heard café owners in other parts of surry hills speak fondly of them.
It’s a [...]

Living juice, broadway
Toby’s estate organic coffee. Mostly a juice bar, but the toby’s sign, and non-matching cups, are calling out to me. Coffee isn’t fresh ground, but is taken from the hopper, so i’m not too optimistic here.
Coffee is hot, a bit thin, and has a lot of flavour. [...]

Coffee cupping at toby’s estate
I’d never been cupping before: it’s the process of tasting single origin beans to determine their quality. After turning up to the wrong branch of Toby’s Estate (should have gone straight to Chippendale), we arrive late to see a lucky few exploring the roasting area [...]

[adriaan] Hinduism no barrier to job (as priest in Church of England). It’s hard to judge whether the priest’s attitude, or the lack of research on the part of the bishop who okayed the licence renewal, is the more worrying.

Circle 8, newtown
Belaroma coffee. 191 king st; seating near the street, indoors, or in the courtyard out the back. Lots of staff, lots of menu choices, but notably missing the straight eggs-and-toast that you can add sides to.
Coffees come in a range of sizes. There’s a bit of a [...]
