Walking over sydney harbour
I guess a cameraphone isn’t the best way to capture a fast walk over the harbour bridge in the early evening, but it’s the best I have available. I get a few strange looks for typing and walking, but most people are too caught up in their own walk to notice.
The walk [...]
Coffee, tea or me? Surry hills
Numero uno coffee. Lots of antique wood, french posters and a french feeling to the menu. Staff are cheery and up for a chat; conversations with the regulars are taking place over the soft, upbeat music. The café seats about 15 inside, with some scope for extra seats outside.
Coffee is [...]
Il baretto, surry hills
Lusty grinds coffee. Seriously crowded: probably making excessive use of the space: I sit on a high stool at a table that is affixed to the wall. Four kitchen staff and a waitress are busily working away. Water is self-service: there’s a jug and glasses at the bar.
Coffee, given the busyness of [...]
The book kitchen, surry hills
The book blend coffee (by single origin). Big and busy, in a quiet corner of surry hills, the café has a lot of conversation buzz all but drowning out the background music. The crowd here is generally upper-middle class, well dressed - friends catching up for a saturday morning breakfast. Staff [...]

16 Blocks
Bruce Willis, Mos Def, and David Morse are characters in this better-than-average action/drama film. Are we in store for a Hollywood ending? What secrets do these characters hide? Can Bruce Willis make it through a movie without his character being injured somehow?

Quote of the day: A.T. Robertson: Give a man an open Bible, an open mind, a conscience in good working order, and he will have a hard time to keep from being a Baptist. I can’t say I agree, but you have to admire the quote anyway.
La deliziosa, five dock
Caffe di stefano coffee. On great north road, in the heart of a busy shopping strip, this café has a massive kitchen at the back., where all manner of beautiful pastries and cakes are prepared.
Staff take a while to take orders, but the coffee is ready in a flash once the order [...]
Angela jayne: coffee; food; art- drummoyne
Toby’s estate coffee. I have a little while longer before clas starts, so I drift up the road a little further to this café, also in the coffee guide sydney.
A bell rings loudly as the door opens, taking me by surprise. The smell indoors is of baking, and it’s quite [...]

I was going to leave this alone, because it was an isolated incident, but I can remain silent no longer. I now have two separate stories of anti-social behaviour in cafes.
First story:
A few weeks ago, three people - myself among them - descended on a cafe: there was seating for about 16 people along one [...]

The highlight of Sunday’s coffee festival (each year it seems there are fewer participating coffee sellers, and more people, making for longer queues) was meeting the guys from the Cafe Guide Sydney: they’d even heard of my efforts to go to all the cafes that they had reviewed!
Don’t even think about taking photos in Melbourne’s Southbank district - there’s a photo ban. Best quote: “It’s a bit much. I know they are trying to protect us, but it’s just a food court.”
Third rock café, beverly hills
Piazza d’oro coffee. Open for dinner and lunch, this is an after-church haunt for the local anglicans. Good range of mains around the $20 mark.
Coffee is a little on the hot side, but well made, and pleasant to drink.
Back to part-time study and full-time work, and back in the swing of things again, I think. College study is great: where else could you borrow a book titled Reading Luke-Acts in its Mediterranean Milieu. I’m looking forward to having a better grasp of the book of Acts over the next several weeks, along with [...]
