el naranjal

julie sent me some El Naranjal beans, and we’ve just finished it. It’s a really strong blend: beyond that, I haven’t figured out the right words to describe coffees. Suffice to say, it’s worth a look.

Tells the story of part of the life of Johnny Cash. Good performances, a good story: especially the insights into family life.

Nature’s own, nambucca heads

Nature’s own, nambucca heads

Bean, ground and drunk coffee (from Beanalliance.com.au. A health food store with a range of health and vitamin products, a jewellery store and a café, among other things. There’s seating for ten, in the midst of the shopping centre on the west side of the highway (near the [...]

Castle café, macadamia castle, knockrow

Castle café, macadamia castle, knockrow

Zentveld’s coffee. After years of driving past the castle, we suddenly pull into its car park. There’s a gift shop, animal sanctuary of sorts, and mini golf, but the first thing encountered is the café. There are macadamia ice creams and desserts, and a [...]

Museum cafe, new italy (woodburn)

Museum café, new italy (woodburn)

Merlo coffee. In the midst of the italian heritage museum is a cafe with well-priced food and coffees. A worthy distraction on the trip north between ballina and the gold coast. Be aware, though: there’s no eftpos here.
Coffee is ready with the food orders - the [...]

heading to the gold coast

In the tradition of fitting as many kilometres as possible into a single long weekend, kel and I are driving up to the gold coast for the weekend. Back monday night, in time to spend a day at the library in preparation for my Old Testament exam Tuesday night.
Update: home now. More details to follow [...]

Caffe andiamo, north sydney

Caffe andiamo, north sydney

Schibello coffee. An old café with a new name, new blend of coffee, and a bit of a refurbishment.
Coffee is well-made. Good strength, enthusiastic barista, good flavour. Looks like it would make a good spot for a meeting.

Chatz corner, hurstville

Chatz corner, hurstville

Caffe migliore coffee. In a tiny space, this café manages to sell just about everything: there’s a salad bar, hot food, chocolate bars, a coke fridge, chips, cakes.
When the assumption is that a customer will have two sugars, it’s not usally a good sign, but the coffee, though thin, [...]

movie: x-men: the last stand

X-Men: The Last Stand
As fast moving as a comic book (and with plenty of large-scale action scenes to justify a big-screen viewing), this film jumps between violent and dramatic, with the occasional touch of humour or sadness. They could have taken it to much greater depths in a lot of spots, but overall, it’s an [...]

the end of lectures

What a whirlwind! Lectures for first semester are already over, all the assignments are handed it: it’s only the exams, and I have two subjects down, and six to go for the grad dip.
There’s a lot of study to do in the next two weeks. The strangest part? They provide a bible, but we bring [...]

There are over 150 dishes on the menu, and none have been photographed well enough to do them justice, so here’s the sizzling seafood combination from the Pho noodle house on burwood road.
