vargabar espresso bar
Schibello coffee. In the middle of newtown, around the back, is this corner-shop size
cafe. Schibello cobranded espresso machine. Bright
mauve paintwork inside, wooden tables and chairs, or you can sit in
the window on a mauve cushion.
Coffee is well presented, a friendly and distinctively newtown
waitress greets you on arrival and offers [...]
Primavera, north sydney
Caffe corsini coffee. Compact kitchen: sells a fixed lunch menu of
daily specials, plus a range of breakfasts. All new staff since a
memorably poor coffee years back scared me away.
Seats about 20; mostly suits, talking shop. Unusually, it’s a jimmy
barnes track playing in the background. Free shortbread with coffee!
Coffee was [...]

Crave on mount st, north sydney
Crave Coffee. $1.80 for a coffee: certainly the chepaest around. Is it worth it? I’m not sure. It’s a strong shot, the milk is well textured; there’s a hint of bitterness there, though.
The sound of the commonwealth games tv coverage drifts noisily from the council [...]
Six weeks into semester already: I’ve now played piano at chapel twice, and set up a few student computers with wireless LAN access. There’s still a lot of reading to do: I’ve read three gospels (Mark on the train to Katoomba, Matthew walking on a treadmill, Luke on an exercise bike), all of Genesis, most [...]
Food I love, mcmahon’s point
Coffee from “the coffee roaster”, lots of open space indoors, a big deli bar; wega coffee machine.
Tables are half glass and half stainless steel. Lots of custom from the buy dinner and reheat it crowd.
Solid coffee, but too far from the north sydney CBD alas.
The penny royal, mosman
Campos coffee. Galley style café: long, narrow space. Basic, but well presented menu options. They care about the coffee; freshly ground for the shot, from a vintage looking la marzocco espresso machine as you’d expect from mosman, the prices are a little high, but great use [...]

Movie: Aeon Flux
Glad I only paid $8 to see this one, thanks to the cheap Monday and Tuesday tickets that are on offer at the moment. A few good sci-fi moments, surrounded by poor dialog, acting, characterization and plot. Just watch the trailer: that’s more than enough time to spend with this film.
DVD: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Has some funny moments, but is not without an overabundance of adult materials. If people have recommended it to you, you’ll probably find it entertaining, but it’s far from a clean movie.
DVD: Alexander - Director’s Cut
We had this recommended for New Testament as a way to get an idea of the looks of the different places: it certainly conjured up some extra thoughts about the big differences in culture that were involved in bringing Greek language and culture to the known world, but as a movie, [...]
Niche café wine bar
Grinders coffee. Modern interior design. Something of a watering hole for suits, especially from the adjacent optus building.
The coffee was freshly ground before making the shot, giving one of the better grinders coffees i’ve had.

Vispo espresso bar, north sydney
Near the top of the hill on walker st, at 122, vispo has both an indoor and an outdoor counter, comfortable seating for around 20 people, and the coffee is quite ok. Good range of food options, especially given its tiny floorspace.
The unusual thing about the cafe [...]
