In the Gold Coast

Travelled from work to Sydney’s T3 via train last night to board an 8:35 flight to the Gold Coast, all the while working on various soduku puzzles, while Kel rested. We’re up here for Kel’s grandmother’s 80th birthday party, and staying with friends Michelle and Trev. It’s something of a working holiday, especially for Michelle, [...]

Some exciting family news along the lines of this photo; looks like I’m getting a new brother-in-law.

Clint Eastwood made another great movie: you can tell it’s something similar in storytelling approach to million dollar baby. Chronicles he story of a widower whose wife has tried to turn him away from the life of crime he had led.

writers’ day

I finally managed to make it to one of the writers’ days that I’ve been trying to attend all year. This one was in the offices of Matthias Media, a place I’ve never visited before: I had an opportunity to test out their great little coffee machine - well worth the visit just for that!

Book: Paul, the Spirit, and the People of God

Book: Paul, the Spirit, and the People of God
A theology book, written by a prominent Charismatic theologian isn’t the kind of thing I usually find myself reading through, but I found it a useful book nonetheless. I found that I agreed with much of what he had to say, in spite of evangelical prejudices - [...]

DVD: Shaun of the Dead

DVD: Shaun of the Dead
A movie I’ve been meaning to watch for a while, and finally made the time to see it last night - I found it laugh-out-loud funny in places; they really made a rom-zom-com (Romantic Comedy, with zombies) that works well in both genres. I’d avoid it if you’re not a fan [...]

DVD: Garden State

Not quite what I expected; enjoyable, but somewhat fragmented in telling the story of a man who is coming to grips with life after the various anti-depressants he has been taking most of his life. Natalie Portman plays a truly annoying character, but doesn’t quite make the character sufficiently likeable.

Movie: The Island

Movie: The Island
Fun action movie; at once more profound than Arnie’s the sixth day, but without that profundity ruining a good action flick. Manages to approach a complex subject, appear to solve it while not probing too deeply. Great to see moments where Ewan McGregor reprises his Catcher Block role from Down with Love. If [...]

ptc sydney open night

Saw Don Carson speak last night (he was giving a lecture on 2 Peter 1, and the false division between experience and theology that has plagued Christendom over the centuries); I probably learned more about preaching from listening to the way he paused than I have in the various sermons I’ve prepared and preached. Well, [...]

Today’s challenge is to become a master photo retoucher in my lunch break. There are a few wedding photos from decades ago for me to work on: all the negatives were damaged in a fire - can you believe it - while they were [...]

ads

I’m currently trialing some google ads over on the right hand side there. At time of publishing, they’re a little obsessed with the town that my brother’s army training was near, but I’m hoping they come up with some other insights as time goes by.

Although it has been suggested that to take photographs of coffees that I make is an indicator of having too much time on my hands, I think it’s a worthwhile investment in time if I’m going to get better [...]

since you’ve been gone

What do you do when someone stops coming to church, or when they change their pattern of church attendance from weekly to fortnightly, or to “every so often”? Do you mention it to them, in the hope that they’ll be encouraged to come back to church, or do you try to ignore the problem, counting [...]
